Monte Serrat

Um dos passeios de hoje foi subir as escadarias do Monte Serrat para ver a vista lá de cima. 

São 415 degraus que podem ser percorridos a pé ou então pode-se pegar um bondinho por vinte e poucos reais (ida e volta) para fazer a subida. Nós escolhemos ir a pé mesmo. 

É uma subida íngreme, então cansa bastante, mas olha, nós nem estamos muito bem condicionados fisicamente e fizemos um paradinha quando chegou na metade, mas até que subimos bem rapidinho. Lá em cima há uma capela e uma cafeteria, e uma vista bem bonita de uma parte da cidade, em especial o porto. Foi uma pequena aventura mas valeu a pena. É bom ir munido de água e ir bem alimentado, porque subir um monte debaixo de sol cansa, viu! Mas cansa bem menos do que a gente imagina para mais de 400 degraus. Enquanto subíamos, passávamos ao lado de diversas casas dos corajosos que moram no morro e enfrentam a subida todo dia. 

No pé da subida, encontramos a fonte do Itororó, antiga fornecedora de água para a cidade e famosa por causa da música ("Fui no Itororó beber água e não achei..."). 

o topo, uma capelinha pequenina e bem simples, que conta com uma vendinha de velas e artigos religiosos e referentes à Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrat. Ao lado, uma casinha onde podem ser deixadas as velas queimando pelas preces. 

Em volta, muita vegetação e ar fresco! E vale para conhecer a capela da padroeira da cidade!

Durante a colonização, quando Santos ainda era uma vila muito pequena. um colono se instalou no topo do monte (que se chamava São Jerônimo) e construiu uma capela para a santa à qual sua esposa era devota, Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrat. Um tempo depois, um navio holandês abarcou para invadir a cidade e a pequena população se refugiou no topo do monte, e rezou para que Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrat os protegesse da invasão. Enquanto os holandeses subiam o morro para alcançar as pessoas, houve um deslizamento que os soterrou ao pé do morro, um fato que foi atribuído à Santa como um milagre. O morro depois foi batizado de Monte Serrat e a santa se tornou padroeira da cidade, e uma vez por ano sua imagem desce e fica na catedral, e sobre novamente em uma procissão no dia 8 de setembro. 

Um marco da cidade que vale a pena ser conhecido, seja de bondinho ou a pé!

One of the walkabout we’ve made today was climbing the stairs of the Serrat Mountain to see the view from up there. There’s around 410 steps that you can climb on foot or take a small tram for twenty something reais (the way up and the way down). We chose to do it on foot. It is a steep climb, so we really get tired, but actually we are not so much fit and we took a break on halfway, but we made it pretty quickly. Upstairs, there’s a small chapel, a coffe shop and a very pretty view of a part of the city, specially the harbor. 

It was a small adventure but it was worth it. It is good to take water with you and go well fed, because taking such a long climb under the sun makes you very tired, you know!

But we got less tired than we thought we would with more than 400 steps. While we were climbing, we passed by the houses of the brave people who live on the mount and face that climb everyday.

On the foot of the mountain, we find the” Itororó” Faucet, which used to supply water to the town and is famous because of a song.

On the top, there’s a small and simple chapel with a small store which sells candles, religious stuff mostly related to the patron saint of the city, “Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrat”. Beside the chapel, there’s a place where we can leave candles burning for our prayers.

All around, a lot of green and fresh air! And it is worth to get to know the chapel of the city’s patron saint.

During the settling in Brazil, when Santos was still a very small village, a man settled down on the mountain and built a chapel for his wife’s favorite saint, “Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrat”. Some time later, a dutch ship arrived at the city to invade it, and the people sought shelter in the mountain. As the dutch climbed the mountain, the people prayed that the saint protected them, and then there was an earth sliding that buried the dutch. That fact was attributed to “Nossa Senhora do Monte Serrat” as a miracle. The mountain that was called “São Jerônimo” was renamed Serrat Mountain as the saint became the city patron. Her image lies in the chapel and goes to the city cathedral once a year and goes back to the chapel on the September 8^th in a procession.

It is a city mark that’s worth to get to know, whether it is with a tram or on foot.
